February 2017: Research confirms: shipwrecks in Java Sea were demolished and removed

A joint Dutch-Indonesian research team has found that shipwrecks have indeed been removed from the Java Sea. By whom is a mystery, but according to the researchers, there are traces of a salvage operation.

These findings were presented to the Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science, who paid a visit to Indonesia last week. In the report, the researchers also recommend that additional joint research will be required on the location of the lost ships. Furthermore, the Netherlands and Indonesia signed a Memorandum of Understanding in order to cooperate more closely in the future to protect maritime cultural heritage.
